7 good eats
On the way to the Snowy Mountains
When you’re heading to the slopes, nothing helps more than a delicious breakfast beforehand, a coffee for the road, or some après fine dining. Here are our top picks and hints to get you started.
Just off the main road in Jindabyne you will find Birchwood Café. A delicious wholefoods menu, coffee to boot from Lonsdale Street Roasters and a rotating specials board including sweet and savoury. From the more traditional egg and bacon role, to apple crumble, Birchwood will fuel you up for a day on the slopes.
Make sure you try one of their breakfast smoothies too!
Overlooking the lake at Jindabyne (perfect for those bluebird days), you will find Jindabyne Brewery (our favourite). They have an amazing tapas menu, based on seasonal and local produce. Not to mention the delicious beer on tap!
They are open Wednesday to Sunday 3-9pm, so make sure you stop in one day on your way back to Canberra.
Juice Bar Jindabyne
Who doesn’t love a good’ol Baked Spud? If these are your thing, make sure you stop at the Jindy Juice Bar in the Nuggets Crossing complex. They also create a huge array of smoothies and milkshakes (and thickshakes). If you can imagine a smoothie, they will have it!
Great spot to take away, drive down to the lake and eat with a view.
Whisk and Cocoa
If you have a sweet tooth, make sure you stop at Whisk and Cocoa at Berridale. Understated on the outside, but when you walk in, you are greeted with warm air and alpine vibes, and the fresh scent of Canberra’s own ONA coffee. They have a full breakfast and lunch menu, and various sweet treats to savour (vegetarian and vegan options).
If you are having a celebration at the snow, they also do specialty cakes you can pick up on the way.
Crackenback Resort and Spa
Options, options options! Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa has tonnes to choose from for those post slopes hunger pains. From a menu showcasing local produce at Cuisine Restaurant and Bar, to rustic wood fire pizzas at Alpine Larder.
If you are staying at the resort, ask reception about their picnic packages!
Rhythm Cooma - Silver Bullet
It wouldn’t be a trip to the snow without a quick stop off at Rhythm Cooma. While you’re there grab a delicious pie (with amazing pastry) and hot coffee from the Silver Bullet near the snowboard shop downstairs. Great for a quick stop, and coffee for the road. They also have some sweet snacks, and there is normally a vegetarian option.
On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, you can also get your coffee fix from Bella Bar and Coffee.
Wild Brumby Schnapps Distillery
What’s not to love about free tastings, local wines, and seasonal schnapps? Did we mention Wild Brumby also has a café with a full breakfast and lunch menu? Tonnes of cocktails, beer and wine to choose from (local and international). Plus there are options for the kids, including homemade organic soda and a huge outdoor area to run around and play.
Final tip, if you love your desserts then this is the place for you!
