Everything you need to get you started!
For us here at Vertikal the season never ends, and we are here to help you get up on the slopes this season with minimal fuss! To get you started, here are a few tips to make sure your first trip to the snow is fun and enjoyable.
Get some lessons under your belt (or board)!
Our classes are great for beginners! You will be able to familiarise yourself with the gear, and learn the mechanics beforehand. Our experienced instructors will help you learn the fundamentals and develop the correct skills to apply on the mountain.
So come in, give it a go and experience your own little piece of alpine life right here in Canberra.
What to pack?
The biggest tip – STAY WARM – it will be cold!
Ski poles (if skiing)
Warm waterproof shoes
Sunscreen and lip balm (trust me!)
Neck warmer and/or balaclava
Camera/Phone for pictures (use a mobile phone rope or lanyard so you don’t drop them taking selfies on the lifts)
** Tip for snowboarding (or even skiing): pick up some impact shorts before you go, they can make all the difference! **
Before you leave?
Check out these useful links to prepare for your trip.
If you are renting your gear, here are some options to get you started. We also recommend booking ahead, especially for busier periods like weekends and school holidays.
There are also a number of local stores in Canberra, Cooma, Sydney and Melbourne which offer rentals from one day to all season long! If you’re heading past Crackenback, head into Harro’s for all your rental needs.
When you get there?
A lift pass is required for all skiers and snowboarders riding in bounds of a resort. This is in the form of a small card, which goes in one of the many pockets available in your ski jacket – often on the sleeve. You can collect this from the service desk when you arrive, or purchase online prior to arrival. Don’t forget to grab a map so you can navigate the slopes!
All mountains have a ski patrol emergency number, make sure you save this in your phone. Everyone has their clumsy moments, especially on the snow.
There is a large variety of restaurants and cafes on and off mountain so you will never go hungry! We recommend the hot chocolates – no matter where you are!
**Thredbo and Perisher (unless you catch the Skitube) require a national parks pass to display on your front car window - be sure not to skip the booth on your way up as the fines are steep.
Have Fun! You’re ready to go!
We hope you love the alpine lifestyle as much as we do!
